Ask any quarterback, and they will tell you that the weather conditions at Alumni Stadium in Boston on Saturday were less than ideal. Playing in a nasty Nor'easter, Virginia Tech's Ethan Grunkemeyer and Boston College's Mason McKenzie hooked up in a late-game duel.
In the end, Grunkemeyer ended up making one more play along with his offense than McKenzie as he rallied Virginia Tech from a 14-6 fourth-quarter deficit for a 21-14 victory. For the day, Grunkemeyer was 22-for-35 for 147 yards and a touchdown pass in the final quarter to Marlion Jackson. What did first-year head coach James Franklin of his signal-calling afternoon?
“He did a nice job really all day,” Franklin said, per ESPN. “We had confidence that we could throw the ball in the rain. I think a combination of the rain and the wind could be challenging, at times. ... Unless you watched that game and you were there, like you guys, it's hard to appreciate. I thought it was impressive.”
It'll be a short week for the Hokies, who will host Pittsburgh on Friday night at Lane Stadium.
Former Hokies shined in NFL wins
It was another busy weekend in the NFL for some former Virginia Tech players,
The Jacksonville Jaguars buried the New England Patriots, 35-6, and got 73 rushing yards and a touchdown from running back Bhayshul Tuten. Tuten also had two catches from QB Trevor Lawrence for 17 yards to help the Jaguars improve to 2-1.
The Kansas City Chiefs picked up a 24-10 road win over the Miami Dolphins, and former Virginia Tech defensive back Mansoor Delane registered 10 tackles for the Chiefs, who remained undefeated at 3-0. KC traded up in the first round of the 2026 NFL Draft to pick Delane, who spent last season at LSU.
Leading the New York Jets, 31-24, the Detroit Lions defense sealed the home win when former Virginia Tech defensive back Chuck Clark recorded a sack on the Jets' final drive that forced a fumble that the Lions recovered to survive New York and improved to 2-1.

- It was a split weekend for the Hokies volleyball team. After dropping their ACC opener, 3-0, on Friday night at Georgia Tech, Virginia Tech picked up their first conference win on Sunday with a 3-1 win at Clemson after dropping the first set. At 4-7 overall, Tech will head to Northern California to visit Stanford on Friday night and California on Saturday night.
- Winners of three straight matches, the Hokies men's soccer team hosted No. 3 SMU on Sunday at Thompson Field, but proved to be no match for the talented Mustangs. SMU used two first-half goals to go on to a 3-0 victory. The Hokies fell to 5-3-1 overall and 2-1-1 in the ACC. Up next is the Commonwealth Clash on Friday night at Virginia.
- The Hokies women's soccer team fell 3-0 at North Carolina State on Sunday. At 6-2-3 overall and 2-1 in the ACC, Virginia Tech will play its first ACC match at Thompson Field on Saturday night against Louisville.
