It was nearly one year ago when Virginia Tech decided to fire former head coach Brent Pry. It came after a 0-3 start to the 2025 season and following a 46-25 beatdown at home at the hands of Old Dominion.
The search committee formed by the school to find his replacement landed former Penn State coach James Franklin a month after he was fired in State College. A couple of weeks after he was hired, he made the incredible decision to bring Pry back to Virginia Tech, three months after he was fired, as his defensive coordinator. It was a move that not many, if anyone, would agree to after being fired.
Pry accepted the position and reunited with Franklin in the same position that he held at Penn State under Franklin. They had a lot of success there, and they are hoping to have the same success in Blacksburg. After a 73-3 win over VMI, Franklin didn't mince words about what it was like to have Pry back as his DC.
"I think Coach Pry is the best defensive coordinator in college football, and we're fortunate to have him here, and he's done a great job,'' said Franklin. "I went up to Brent before the game and just thanked him. The way he's handled this whole process and the humility that he has, the love that he has for Virginia Tech and the love he has for his family- a big part of it his family was going to stay here for another year. We are fortunate to keep Coach Pry around here in this role, and I think he's back doing what he loves.''

- The Hokies volleyball team bounced back from a 3-0 loss to Winthrop with a 3-0 win over Old Dominion to improve to 3-2 on the season over the weekend in the Winthrop Invitational. Virginia Tech will head to Northwestern next weekend for the Northwestern Invitational for three matches against Northwestern, Wisconsin-Green Bay, and LIU.
- Virginia Tech's men's soccer team opened up ACC play with a 1-1 tie at North Carolina State. The Hokies opened the scoring in the 30th minute on a header from David Skovborg-Andersen off a cross from Alvaro Ruiz-Mateos. The Wolfpack tied the game in the 57th minute. At 2-1-1, Virginia Tech will host East Tennessee State on Wednesday night at Thompson Field at 6 p.m.
- The Hokies women's soccer team dropped a non-conference match at home to Illinois, 1-0, on Sunday afternoon. At 4-1-3 overall, the Hokies are off until Sept. 17, when they open ACC play at Pittsburgh.
