It took a little longer than many thought it would to replace James Franklin at Virginia Tech, but Penn State AD Pat Kraft settled on Iowa State coach Matt Campbell. As is the case with Franklin at Virginia Tech, Campbell brought some of his former players to State College.
One of those players brought to Penn State was quarterback Rocco Becht. Despite not being around the program last year, he had some things to say bout the program even though he was in Ames playing for the Cyclones.
“He wants to build a player-led program,” Becht said. “When you’re not all aligned with the same goals and expectations, you’re not going to win those big games. … Last year, it wasn’t really player-led and the culture just wasn’t always there. Right now, where we are, everyone is completely bought in.”
You would think that he was there and saw it firsthand. That's quite the take for someone who wasn't even there. Franklin is catching strays from everywhere in State College six months after he's gone.
Virginia Tech baseball RPI soars after win over Liberty
Three days after taking two out of three over California in an ACC series out West, the Hokies baseball team faced a huge task on the road on Wednesday night. Virignia Tech made the trip to Liberty to take on the Flames in what was a rather big game in terms of improving their NCAA Tournament résumé.
Virginia Tech jumped out to a 7-0 lead, held the Flames hitless for 6.2 innings, and held on for an 8-4 win. How big a win was it? With that win, not only did the Hokies improve their record to 26-21 overall, but their RPI surged up five spots to No. 32. That will be huge come selection time for the NCAA Tournament. Virginia Tech will host UNC Greensboro this weekend for a pair of non-conference games.
