It wasn't the start to the game on late Sunday afternoon that Virginia Tech women's basketball coach Megan Duffy was hoping for. Hosting 4-7 East Tennessee State, the Hokies found themselves down 16-11 after one quarter.
Duffy's team was able to regroup and outscore the Buccaneers, 63-39, over the final three quarters to pull away for a 73-55 victory to improve to 9-3.
Carys Baker led the way with 22 points and eight rebounds for Virginia Tech. Northwestern transfer Mel Daley had 13 points and four rebounds, while Samyha Suffren had 12 points and four steals. Carleigh Wenzel had eight points and six rebounds, while Kilah Freelon (five rebounds) and Mackenzie Nelson (eight assists and three steals) each had seven points. The Hokies will travel to Florida State on Thursday night looking to even their ACC record at 1-1.
Mike Young gives injury updates
Before the women beat East Tennessee State, Mike Young and the men took down the University of Maryland Eastern Shore, 82-53, to improve to 10-2. The Hokies played the game minus a couple of players and got a scare with freshman Neoklis Avdalas.
Avdalas was injured late in the first half, but returned in the second half to power the Hokies to a win. UNLV transfer Jailen Bedford missed the game with an illness. We'll see who is available when Elon comes to Blacksburg on Saturday afternoon.
Bhayhsul Tuten scores another touchdown
Jaylin Lane returned a second punt for a touchdown this season for the Washington Commanders on Sunday afternoon in their 29-22 victory over the New York Giants. He finished with 91 return yards on three punts in the game.
Meanwhile, down in Jacksonville, another former Hokies star scored a touchdown when running back Bhayhsul Tuten caught a 16-yard pass for a touchdown from Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence for the sixth overall touchdown of his rookie season. Jacksonville moved a game closer to winning the AFC South with a 48-20 rout of the New York Jets.
