The Virginia Tech softball team enjoyed the last nine days off after sweeping a doubleheader from Longwood on March 19. They returned to the diamond on Friday night in a Top 25 matchup hosting Stanford in their first-ever ACC series, and what a start to the weekend it was.
Stanford, ranked 16th, grabbed a 2-0 lead off of Emma Lemley, but the Hokies rallied with four runs for a 4-2 lead before holding off a Cardinal rally in the top of the seventh to escape with a 4-3 victory. Hitless going into the bottom of the fourth down a pair of runs, the Hokies took the lead on a three-run Zoe Yaeger home run. Virginia Tech added a huge insurance run in the bottom of the sixth on an RBI ground out from Annika Rohs. Game 2 will be Saturday at 4 p.m., and Game 3 is Sunday at noon.
Baseball blasts No. 16 Wake Forest
After taking two out of three last weekend at home against Louisville, the Hokies baseball team was looking to get off to a good start at No. 16 Wake Forest who is one of the better teams in college baseball at home. If there was a dream start for John Szefc's team, they got it and then some.
Before ace Brent Renfrow even took the mound, he was staked to a 9-0 lead on their way to a 13-2 win. That's right, the Hokies put up a nine spot in the top of the first thanks to wild Demon Deacons pitching. They took advanatge of six walks, a hit batter and four hits to account for the nine runs. The Hokies improved to 18-8 overall, and Wake Forest fell to 20-7.
Former Virginia Tech coach bolting current job?
When Buzz Williams left Virginia Tech for Texas A&M, he thought that he might find a job that he might find as his dream job. He has had a lot of success in College Station with the Aggies and had them in the NCAA Tournament this year, losing in the second round to Michigan last weekend.
There has been a lot of drama surrounding Kevin Willard and Maryland, and there is a belief that he could come into play to be the head coach at Villanova, and if that happens, Williams reportedly would be interested in going to College Park to replace Willard if he does leave. Marquette, Virginia Tech, and Texas A&M and it appears Williams has had his time run out in Texas and met his shelf life.
