Virginia Tech Hokies News: Florida State football cleans house, NCAA soccer Tournament
By Scott Roche
It's a busy weekend around Blacksburg and the ACC world this Veterans Day weekend. It began Friday night with the Virginia Tech men's basketball team beating USC Upstate, then on Saturday, the football dropped a disappointing 24-14 decision at home to Clemson. Sunday, the women's basketball team suffered a 19-point loss to Iowa in Charlotte. Now Monday night, it'll be up to Mike Young and his team again to save the weekend. That's where we'll begin this edition of Virginia Tech Hokies News.
Men's basketball to host Winthrop
The Hokies men's basketball team will look to remain perfect in the young 2024-25 season when they host Winthrop at Cassell Coliseum on Monday night at 7 p.m. After beating Delaware State and USC Upstate, this is the final game of a three-game homestand to begin the season. Friday night, the Hokies will be in Baltimore to play Penn State in a neutral-court match-up.
Women's soccer to learn NCAA Tournament fate
Monday afternoon, the bracket for the 2024 NCAA Women's Soccer Tournament will be released and it should include the Hokies, but just where and against who remains to be seen. Virginia Tech has two Top 10 wins this season, over Florida State and Notre Dame, which helped their chances for a decent seed.
Florida State football begins to clean house
Nobody saw the Florida State football team at 1-9 through the first 10 games of the season, but here we are. Like Virginia Tech, it's a disappointing season for the Seminoles, and head coach Mike Norvell got a head start on cleaning house on his coaching staff ahead of the 2025 season.
Sunday, Norvell fired offensive coordinator/offensive line coach Alex Atkins, defensive coordinator Adam Fuller, and wide receivers coach Ron Duggan. It's not surprising that FSU is making some coaching changes and the same thing needs to be considered at Virginia Tech following this disappointing season.
