Two days after Virginia Tech fired Brent Pry as football coach, interim coach Philip Montgomery met with the media for the first time since the change. At 0-3, the Hokies close the non-conference portion of their schedule on Saturday afternoon at Lane Stadium against Wofford.

Virginia Tech players have 30 days, which began on Monday, to redshirt because they haven't played in four games yet and enter the Transfer Portal. Cornerback Dante Lovett was the first to enter, and maybe more are coming. Injuries have played a big role in Virginia Tech's start, and could changes be coming? Maybe, but the former Tulsa coach defended starting quarterback Kyron Drones on Tuesday when asked about allowing another quarterback, Pop Watson or Garrett Rangel.

"Maybe, we haven't lived up to some of the expectations offensively,'' said Montgomery. "We've got to grow as a group. In my opinion, that doesn't fall on one person. We've got to do it collectively as a group. We've got to continue to keep growing as an offense. We have to continue to keep growing as a defense, and we have to continue to keep growing as a football team. That's got to be our focus.

"We've got to get some guys back healthy. That's going to help in some areas. But that being said, this is not about one person. This is not about me. This is not about Kyron. This is not about this person. This is about us collectively as a group and how we're going to continue to move forward."

If the offense struggles early on against the Terriers, it'll be interesting to see if Montgomery does end up making a switch under center.
