After opening the season by rallying from a 4-1 deficit on Thursday night with a seven-run sixth to beat 14th-ranked South Carolina in Columbia, 8-4, the 19th-ranked Virginia Tech softball team swept a doubleheader on Friday to improve to 3-0 on the young season.
They beat Binghamton, 4-1, in the first game on the strength of solo home runs from Emma Mazzarone and Addison Foster. Zoe Yaeger gave the Hokies some insurance with a two-run double in the fifth inning. Sophie Kleiman pitched the first four innings to pick up the win, while Bree Carrico pitched the final three innings. In the nightcap, Nora Abromavage drove in the only run with an RBI double. Avery Layton was the winning pitcher.
Virginia Tech will close out the weekend on Saturday with a pair of games against Binghamton and South Carolina.
Wrestling routs Virginia
The seventh-ranked Hokies wrestling team made the trip to Charlottesville on Friday night and rolled over in-state rival Virginia, 32-7, to improve to 9-2 overall and 4-0 in the ACC. Virginia Tech remains in first-place with two conference matches remaining at home against North Carolina and Duke.
Winners for the Hokies against the Cavaliers were Eddie Ventresca, Aaron Seidel, Ethen Miller in a tremendous bout, Mac Church, Sergio Desiante, Jaden Bullock, Sonny Sasso, and Jimmy Mullen.
Men's basketball visits NC State; women host NC State
Mike Young and the Hokies men's basketball team will visit North Carolina State on Saturday, coming off a bye week. The Wolfpack is one of the hottest teams in the country, coming off a road win at SMU on Tuesday night. Virginia Tech will again be without Tyler Johnson, who has yet to play in an ACC game this year. Remember, the game has been moved up 90 minutes and will begin at noon on the CW Network.
As for Megan Duffy and the women's team, they will host NC State on Sunday afternoon at Cassell Coliseum coming off an 80-70 loss at Notre Dame on Thursday night. Just like the men, the women are on the NCAA Tournament bubble and a win over the Wolfpack would do wonders for their résumé.
Lacrosse opens season with win
The Hokies women's lacrosse team began the 2026 season with a 12-10 win over Mercer. Virginia Tech got two goals each from Lauren Render, Cassandra Montgomery, Sarah Murrell, and Ally Phalines. Tech will visit James Madison next Wednesday before opening ACC play on Feb. 14 against Louisville at home.
