For the first time in a long time, there is a football game being played on Friday night at Lane Stadium in Blacksburg with some juice to it. After beginning the season 4-0, the Virginia Tech and Pittsburgh football teams will meet to make college football history in the first matchup between two Power 4 Conference schools this late in the season that are both undefeated, and neither is ranked.
It's safe to say that both teams will look to take advantage of a primetime standalone game for a while to prove their case to be ranked as the winner in Sunday's Associated Press Top 25. Hokies fans have been waiting a long time for a game with some big meaning to it, and it just so happens to be James Franklin's fifth game as head coach. He has asked fans to show up and be loud, but his message isn't the only one doing that. Former defensive coordinator and legend Bud Foster is also asking for Hokie Nation to be loud and proud.
Hokies, we need you to bring an unbelievable energy and your loudest voice to make life miserable for the Pitt Panthers Friday's night. Let's create the best home field advantage in America. 4QT's of chaos!!! #LGH
— Bud Foster (@coachfostervt) September 30, 2026
Both Franklin and Foster should have their message heard loud and clear, and Lane Stadium should be rocking. Will it be enough to pick up a huge victory over a tough Panthers team? We hope so.
Virginia Tech men's basketball adds a transfer
After a court preliminary injunction last week, Mike Young and the Hokies men's basketball team officially welcomed and signed Efrem "Butta" Johnson on Thursday for the upcoming season. He is a Clemson transfer, so he knows the ACC very well.
Johnson, who began his college career at UAB, is a 6-foot-4 guard who has already cracked the 1,000-point plateau and is shooting 39% from the field and 35% from beyond the arc. He givesYoung not only some depth, but likely some scoring off the bench.
Breakfast with former Hokies
When you wake up on Sunday morning, wherever you are, you will be able to turn on the TV and watch a couple of former Hokies playing over in London beginning at 9:30 a.m. Tim Settle, Jaylin Lane, and the Washington Commanders will play the Indianapolis Colts on the NFL Network.
There are a couple of other former Virginia Tech players in primetime over the weekend. The Sunday night game on NBC at 8:20 has Chuck Clark and the Detroit Lions visiting the Carolina Panthers. The Monday night game has Divine Dealbo and the Atlanta Falcons visiting the New Orleans Saints on ESPN.
