The 57th edition of the Commonwealth Clash on the pitch between the Virginia Tech and Virginia men's soccer teams took place on Friday night at Thompson Field in Blacksburg, and it was a battle for 90 minutes. When the dust settled, the 8th-ranked Hokies and Cavaliers played to a 2-2 draw.
Virginia (3-1-1) struck first in the 26th minute on a goal from Umberto Pelà, before the Hokies evened the match two minutes later on an Andy Sullins strike. In the 44th minute, Virginia Tech took the lead at 2-1 on an Amir Ariely tally.
Virginia evened the match in the 79th minute when Nicholas Simmonds tied the game. The Hokies are 2-0-2 after the tie in their ACC opener, and they return to the pitch on Tuesday night, hosting Furman at Thompson Field.
John Love to wear No. 25 vs. Vanderbilt
When the Hokies football team takes the field at Lane Stadium on Saturday night against Vanderbilt, they will do so looking for a win after a season-opening loss to South Carolina last Sunday afternoon in Atlanta. This week, kicker John Love will wear No. 25 against the Commodores.
Love was a perfect 3-for-3 on field goals against the Gamecocks, including a long of 56 yards to end the first half. This has all the makings of being a close game at the end, and don't be surprised if it comes down to a Love field goal attempt to be the deciding factor.
Volleyball sweeps opening day in Delaware
After winning two out of three last weekend at UNC-Wilmington, the Hokies volleyball team headed to Delaware and won a pair of games on the first day of the Blue Hen Invitational. They swept both matches, 3-0, against Hampton and Delaware to improve to 4-1. They will close out the weekend in Delaware with a match against Le Moyne at 1 p.m. on Saturday.
