Following the 2025 Virginia Tech baseball season, first baseman Garrett Michel hit the Transfer Portal to bolt Blacksburg. When the dust settled, the power-hitting left-handed hitter ended up heading to the Big 12 and committing to Arizona State.
In three years in Blacksburg, injuries hampered his time there, as he only had one full season without any injuries. During his time in a Hokies' uniform, he slashed .326/.446/.607 with 17 home runs and 77 runs driven in. Eleven of his 17 career home runs at Virginia Tech came in his freshman season.
In 49 games for the Sun Devils, he had a .277 batting average with three home runs and 20 RBIs with an OPS of .831. Arizona State finished 39-21 and was eliminated in the NCAA Tournament by Ole Miss in the Nebraska Regional.
According to Andrew Hayslett of Arizona State, Michel is hitting the Transfer Portal again. It'll be interesting to see where he ends up, but someone looking for a left-handed bat should give him a long, hard look.
UNC forces deciding Game 3 at the College World Series
After dropping the opening game of their College World Series Championship Series to Oklahoma 9-3 on Saturday afternoon, North Carolina evened the best-of-three series on Sunday afternoon with a 6-2 win over the Sooners.
The deciding Game 3 will be on Monday at 7 p.m. on ESPN. The Tar Heels are the only ACC team that made it to Omaha this season and now have won four of their five games there. They needed a fourth win on Sunday to force a deciding Game 3 on Monday night. Oklahoma grabbed a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning before UNC plated the last six runs, highlighted by a two-run home run from Cooper Nicholson. The Tar Heels bounced Virginia Tech from the ACC Tournament last month in the semifinals.
Former Virginia Tech slugger goes deep again
It is turning into a big first season for former Virginia Tech standout TJ Rumfield with the Colorado Rockies. After being acquired from the New York Yankees before spring training, he was named the National League Rookie of the Month for May.
On Friday night against the Pittsburgh Pirates at Coors Field, he became the second first-year Rockies player to hit at least 11 home runs in his first 76 games, joining Trevor Story, who clubbed 19 in 2016. On Sunday, Colorado dropped the series final to the Pirates, 8-6, but Rumfield went deep for a three-run home run in the bottom of the eighth inning. He now has 12 homers on the season for manager and former Virginia Tech player Warren Schaeffer.
