Virginia Tech fans remember the feeling just 12 months ago. The Hokies started the season 0-3 after a brutal loss at home to Old Dominion, and Brent Pry was fired the next day. If there is someone who knows the hot seat early in the season, it's Pry.
Two ACC coaches might be feeling the heat a lot more going into this week: Mike Norvell at Florida State and Dave Doeren at North Carolina State. Let's start with Norvell. His team had some early momentum at Alabama on Saturday before a weather delay crushed that momentum. The Crimson Tide rallied before halftime before blowing FSU in the second half. His seat is scorching hot.
As for Doeren, somehow, he keeps surviving in Raleigh, but if Saturday's loss at Vanderbilt doesn't put some heat on him, I don't know what will. The Wolfpack led 31-28 with six seconds left and facing a fourth down near their goal line. Quarterback CJ Bailey scrambled to attempt to take a sack and run out the clock, but he fumbled it in the end zone, and it was recovered by Vanderbilt for a game-winning touchdown. You can't make it up.
Former Virginia Tech football players spark wins at new schools
On Saturday, a pair of former Virginia Tech football transfers helped their teams pick up a pair of wins in home games. Former linebacker Caleb Woodson had five tackles in Alabama's 50-36 victory over Florida State.
Meanwhile, in Amherst, Mass., former Hokies quarterback Pop Watson threw for 160 yards on 15 completions and a touchdown and rushed for another in UMass' 36-14 win over Stonehill. The Minutemen are 3-0 with Watson under center, which includes a stunning season-opening win at Rutgers. UMass heads to Sacramento State on Saturday night with an opportunity to get to 4-0, something nobody thought was possible at the beginning of the season.

- The Hokies women's soccer team opened ACC play with a win at Pitt on Thursday night. On Sunday afternoon, they improved to 2-0 in ACC play with a 1-0 win at Syracuse. It was a scoreless game until the 85th minute when Hannah Pachan buried a pass from Riley Karpinski into an open net for the only goal needed. At 6-1-3 overall, Virginia Tech heads to North Carolina State for a third straight road game next Sunday at 6 p.m.
- The Hokies men's soccer team improved to 2-0-1 with a 4-2 victory at Duke. The Blue Devils opened the scoring in the second minute; Virginia Tech went into halftime tied 2-2 on goals from Amir Ariely and Luke Hamel. The Hokies netted both goals in the second half on strikes from Ariely and Alex Perez on a penalty kick. Tech will host Queens on Tuesday night.
- Virginia Tech's volleyball team fell to 3-6 with a 3-0 loss at South Carolina. The Hokies open ACC play on Friday night at Georgia Tech.
