It's done. After another embarrassing loss in Week 3, the Virginia Tech football team made the call that needed to be made: the Hokies fired Brent Pry as head coach. It only felt like a matter of time before things got finalized there, as Pry continued to prove that he wasn't the right man for the job.
From the moment it was reported that Pry was going to be on the way out of town, people have been wondering who the administration will target as the long-term replacement. Obviously, Michael Vick has been someone who fans have speculated about.
Virginia Tech fires Brent Pry after four underwhelming seasons
He's a Blacksburg legend and people are never going to forget about his incredible play while on campus. He's now the head coach at Norfolk State, but he reportedly has interest in the position. Not only that, but CBS Sports' Richard Johnson and Roger Gonzalez have stated that Vick is expected 'to be in the mix' for the role. Would potentially hiring him be a huge mistake, though?
The Michael Vick to Virginia Tech speculation has already come in
"As the program begins a search for Pry's replacement, former Virginia Tech quarterback and current Norfolk State coach Michael Vick would "definitely" be interested in the open head coaching job, sources tell CBS Sports' Richard Johnson and Roger Gonzalez," Chris Bengel wrote for CBS. "Johnson reports that the Hokies expect Vick "to be in the mix" for the coaching job. Vick would be willing to listen since Virginia Tech is a "special place" for him, but also wants to "get Norfolk State right too."
So, you're saying there's a chance? From our chair, it's a bit of a surprise that Vick is being linked to the job, especially since he's in Year 1 at Norfolk State. Vick and Norfolk State are 1-2 on the campaign thus far, suffering a 60-10 loss to Rutgers on Saturday.
The team's lone win of the year came last week against Virginia State. The season-opener couldn't have gone worse, with a loss to Towson being posted. Vick has just begun this new journey as a head coach at the college level and he needs more time to learn the ins and outs.
Would someone else with more experience at this level be a better option? In case you missed our replacements piece from earlier, guys like Dan Mullen, Jon Sumrall and others are high on our list as candidates VT should pursue.
Down the road, Vick very well could end up being a stud coach, with his ability to recruit seeming like it'll be easy because of what he was able to get done in the NFL. However, Virginia Tech's next hire needs to get this program back on the right track and it needs to be someone who has a proven track record of winning with consistency. Fans love Vick, but he can't be the hire for the Hokies this time around.
