When former Virginia Tech football coach Brent Pry hired Matt Moore away from West Virginia to replace Ron Crook as the offensive line coach in Blacksburg, it was seen as a home run hire. It became more evident when he had some of his former linemen from Morgantown follow him to Virginia Tech.

The last couple of years, the Hokies' offensive line struggled and needed a new voice. Moore was tasked with rebuilding the line after all the starters from the 2024 season either left through the Transfer Portal or were out of eligibility.

That made getting some transfers a must to go along with returning players who got some previous experience in 2024, as well as some freshmen. Unfortunately for Moore and the Hokies in 2025, the line was hit with injuries and forced to move players around and into other positions. In the end, it all worked out, but there were some younger players who got some time and were a priority to retain going forward.

Virginia Tech gets key offensive line retention for 2026

New coach James Franklin is retaining Moore for next season, which is huge, and on Wednesday, center Kyle Altuner announced that he will be returning for next fall. This is major news, given how well Altuner played this past season, and there is a ton of room for improvement. He should take the next step in 2026 and be one of the better centers in the ACC.

Virginia Tech's offensive line saw some key players get a lot of meaningful snaps this season in what was a frustrating 3-9 season. In the long run, that is going to play off big time for a program that should add through the portal and has some talented younger players ready to make an impact. The retention news keeps getting better for Franklin.
