When it comes to rivals for the Virginia Tech football team, some are no-brainers, and some are ones that you might not think of. Some games Hokies fans used to look forward to on the schedule, and some that they wish they still had on the schedule.
When the schedule is released each season, Hokies fans look for the dates of some teams to see when they pop up. They know when Virginia pops up: Thanksgiving Weekend. With that said, here are three rivals of Virginia Tech ranked as the biggest foes, whether it's in the non-conference slate or in the ACC slate.
West Virginia
If there is one non-conference game the Hokies should play year in and year out, it's West Virginia. Going back to their old Big East days. Playing for the Black Diamond Trophy, the Hokies and Mountaineers had some memorable battles. However, the last time they met was in 2022 when West Virginia came to Blacksburg and laid down a 33-10 beatdown.
West Virginia holds a 30-22-1 series lead with no future matchups scheduled. If there is one series that needs to be renewed, it's this one, and the games should be played on campus rather than a neutral site. It's a no-brainer.
Miami
The good thing is that with the new ACC schedule model, Virginia Tech and Miami are going to be meeting a lot. They have hooked up in some great games, including in 2024 when the Hokies had a victory snatched from them by replay review. A touchdown on the field was overturned by video review without clear evidence. Shocker in South Florida.
Miami holds a 27-15 series lead, also going back to their Big East days, but now that they're in the ACC and James Franklin is on board in Blacksburg, this rivalry could get real spicy going forward. If Virginia Tech can turn into an ACC threat year in and year out, what a game this will be each fall.
Virginia
This one goes without saying, but honestly, how can it be a rivalry when the matchup is dominated by one side? Virginia Tech owns a series lead of 62-34-5, and with Franklin on board, the gap is only going to widen between the Hokies and their Little Brother.
It has been stated before and should be stated again: as bad as Brent Pry's tenure was at Virginia Tech, he never lost to Virginia. That is all you need to know. The dominance over the last couple of decades speaks for itself on the football field.
