ESPN college football analyst Kirk Herbstreit joined the Bussin With The Boys podcast recently and discussed the upcoming season. The former Ohio State quarterback touched on several different topics. There was one question he was asked about which first-year head coach will have more success in the next five years: James Franklin at Virginia Tech, Matt Campbell at Penn State, or Bob Chesney at UCLA. His answer was interesting.
"I think James Franklin is going to get a new life,'' said Herbstreit. "I pray that he brings the Hokies back. Lane Stadium used to rock. We found out we were going to Lane, not just Enter Sandman, but just the entire game. They were just one of those fan bases that stands and cheers, and if the opponent gets a first down on 3rd-and-7, Ohio State, they sit down. Michigan. They sit down. Virginia Tech, they get louder. It used to be a great place, so hopefully he can bring that back.''
Herbstreit went on to say that Campbell at Penn State has an edge in having the better career over five years, but he also mentioned that he liked all three hires. It'll be interesting to see how things end up playing out down the line.
Virginia Tech adds transfer from an SEC school
In this day and age of college football, it feels like the commitments and movement from school to school are never-ending. Not only is it happening with the Transfer Portal, but now it's happening with members of the Class of 2026 before they even play a snap.
Four-star athlete Chris Tangelo, who previously committed to Vanderbilt in the SEC before committing to Hutchinson Junior College, reportedly committed to the Hokies, according to Brian Dohn of 247Sports. He did not play for either school. The 6-foot-4, 195-pound Maryland native is the 227th overall prospect in his class, the 11th-ranked athlete, and Maryland's No. 9 player. He is ineligible to play until the 2027 season.
James Franklin addresses Virginia Tech's BOV
This will get Penn State fans' panties all ruffled in a bunch, but Franklin and the new Virginia Tech athletic director, Brian White, spoke at the Virginia Tech Board of Visitors meeting this week about investments and acknowledged that Virginia Tech is trying to play catch-up with other schools in terms of resources to compete, according to Andy Bitter of Tech Sideline.
We'll see how things go, but you have to think that Virginia Tech is going to do all it can to continue to move in the right direction in terms of resources.
