In the first half of Saturday's game against Georgia Tech, it was a struggle for the Virginia Tech football team's offense. Offensive coordinator Tyler Bowen was looking to jump-start his unit which led 7-3 after a Kyron Drones touchdown pass to tight end Benji Gosnell.

Facing a goal-to-go late in the half, Bowen went into his bag of tricks and called for the Philly Special and his team pulled it off to perfection. Wide receiver Jaylin Lane ended up with the ball and lofted a pass to the end zone to Drones who was wide open for a touchdown catch. Tuesday, Lane met with the media and when asked by David Cunningham from Tech Sideline about his throw, he had a funny response.

It ended up being a big play in the game and in the 21-6 victory as it gave the Hokies a bigger lead against Georgia Tech in a game that was low-scoring and an offensive struggle at times for both teams. Lane said that the Hokies had been practicing that play for a long time, but it worked, but he wasn't happy with his throw.

"It was kind of a duck, but it got there,'' said Lane with a smile.

Duck or not, it got the job done. It was a big momentum play in a game that needed it. That was also significant because Lane joined an elite list with his touchdown toss. He joins C.J. Spiller from Clemson (2009), Jacoby Ford (Clemson), and Graig Cooper (2008) of Miami as the only ACC players in the last 20 years to have a rushing catching, throwing and punt return for a touchdown in the same season.

Lane went on to say that Bowen has more trick plays up his sleeve this season and we might not be done with momentum-changing calls from Virginia Tech in 2024.
