Generally, when the calendar flips to August, it's a very quiet time in college basketball. Rosters, for the most part, are set for the next season, and the breadcrumbs for the upcoming seaosn have been laid during offseason workouts.
However, 2026 is not a regular offseason when it comes to college sports. On Friday, a federal court ruled that all high school class of 2022 athletes who exhausted their fourth season of college eligibility this spring are eligible for a fifth season in 2026-27. Enter former Virginia Tech men's basketball recruit guard AJ Storr, as one of the Class of 2022 athletes who gets one more year of college.
Joe Tipton of On3 reported that Storr is entering the Transfer Portal, which opens Aug. 3 and runs through Aug. 10, after playing this past season at Ole Miss under Chris Beard. He is clearly someone that Hokies coach Mike Young should kick the tires on again when the portal window opens on Monday.

The 6-foot-5 Storr, who hails from Rockford, Illinois, averaged 15.5 points and 3.1 rebounds in 2025-26 for the Rebels while shooting 45% from the field. He has played at four different schools over the last four seasons. He played at St. John's, Wisconsin, and Kansas before Ole Miss.
His sophomore season at Wisconsin was his best college season in terms of stats. Storr averaged 16.8 points a game and 3.9 rebounds for the Badgers. He was among several players who were granted an injunction for another year of eligibility.
As far as Virginia Tech and Mike Young go, he was offered a scholarship by the veteran head coach in April of 2021. The Hokies had some roster turnover this offseason, but they returned a very good nucleus that includes guard Ben Hammond and forwards Tyler Johnson and Amani Hansberry.
Virginia Tech is in dire need of a season that ends with an NCAA Tournament berth. Young has a roster that, on paper, might or might not be better than last season, but adding a player like Storr to the core that Young retained is clearly something he should consider, and take advantage of the ruling on Friday.
