Despite doing a lot of work through the transfer portal already, Virginia Tech men’s basketball coach Mike Young is looking to still add to his roster for the 2025-26 season. He did it on Friday by adding another big to his frontcourt by signing Solomon Davis, a 6-foot-11 center.

Davis, who played at DeMatha Catholic in Maryland, missed a good chunk of the AAU scene last year, which hampered his recruiting. We he returned to play with Virginia Elite, he opened some eyes, and those eyes were Young’s, who was able to convince him to commit.

“Solomon is a tremendous addition to our program," Young said. "At 6-foot-11, he brings size, athleticism and a motor that doesn't stop. He’s just beginning to tap into his potential, and what stands out most is his hunger to learn and his love for the game. Solomon is eager to grow, and we’re just as excited to help him develop here in Blacksburg.”

Davis will join a frontcourt that includes incoming freshman Christian Gurdak, along with transfer Amani Hansberry from West Virginia and Tobi Lawal, who returned after going through the NBA Draft process. It’s safe to say that the Hokies are going to have more front-court options next season than they had this past season after Mylyjael Poteat graduated and Patrick Wessler entered the transfer portal.

Just how much Davis ends up playing, if at all, remains to be seen, but developing a big is key for Young and Virginia Tech for the future. He joins fellow Class of 2025 members Gurdak, Sin’Cere Jones, and Brett Freeman joining the program. Looking to bounce back from a, 13-19, 2024-25 season that was one of the more frustrating ones in some time, Young is assembling a roster that should do that next winter if the pieces all fall into place.
