The college football Transfer Portal opens on Jan. 2 this season, and there will only be one portal window. All players looking to transfer need to file their paperwork, but don't need to commit until later on.
First-year Virginia Tech football coach James Franklin is going to have multiple needs when the portal opens. One of them is going to be a quarterback now that Kyron Drones played his final season for the Hokies in 2025.
Pop Watson is the only quarterback with experience, while Oklahoma State transfer Garrett Rangel is still on the roster, but who knows what the future holds for both of them. Freshman Kelden Ryan and A.J. Brand have no experience. Franklin is going to need someone to come in and start right away, and there are beginning to be options for the former Penn State coach.
Florida quarterback D.J. Langway reportedly entering the Transfer Portal
Last week, Old Dominion quarterback Colton Joseph was reported to be entering the portal, and Hokies' fans know how much of a dual-threat QB he is. Another potential option for Franklin and Virginia Tech is reportedly going to enter the portal.
According to Pete Thamel of ESPN, Florida quarterback DJ Langway intends to enter the Transfer Portal. He was a Top 10 recruit and the No. 1 dual-threat quarterback in the Class of 2024 cycle by ESPN. Langway later confirmed the report on Instagram.

This season for the Gators, Langway thre for 2,264 yards, 16 touchdowns, and 14 interceptions. In 2024, he threw for 1,915 yards, 12 touchdowns, and nine interceptions as Florida rebounded from a tough start to the season to make a bowl game. Langway struggled at times under former Florida coach Billy Napier, but there is no denying the talent he has.
Franklin hired former Penn State quarterback coach Danny O'Brien to join him at Virginia Tech. He has a history of developing QBs for Franklin when they were in State College, and could be the change Langway needs.
Franklin is going to need a quarterback for next season through the portal, and there will be multiple options, but Langway offers a dual-threat that could thrive under Franklin and O'Brien. This is a name to certainly watch as things start to move with the portal next month.
