When Virginia Tech men's basketball coach Mike Young landed highly-touted freshman Christian Gurdak out of high school, it was a big commitment for the Hokies in the middle.

The 6-foot-10 center has a good inside game. You knew that he was going to see a lot of time this year off the bench for Virginia Tech, and that ended up happening. He was a vital player off the bench in terms of being able to finish around the basket, rebounding the basketball, and he was a good free-throw shooter for a big man.

After the disappointing 2025-26 season ended for the Hokies last month in the first round of the ACC Tournament, some members of the roster departed through the Transfer Portal. Sadly, one of those players who hit the portal was Gurdak. Over the last couple of weeks, it was quiet in terms of Gurdak and the schools that were linked to him. On Friday, it was announced that he was committed to Rutgers.

Virginia Tech transfer Christian Gurdak commits to Rutgers

Gurdak averaged 5.6 points and 4.4 rebounds a game for the Hokies this season. He was more important than just the numbers. He played some key minutes once the ACC schedule started and the Hokies were down Tobi Lawal and Tyler Johnson. Along with Antonio Dorn and Amani Hansberry, he played a key part in Virginia Tech trying to get by without their best player.

Truth be told, Rutgers is a surprise. Sure, it's a Big Ten school and the conference that is the home to this past season's National Champion in Michigan. This is certainly a landing spot that is going to open some eyes. Young has a lot of work to do in terms of building a roster for next season in Blacksburg, and Gurdak is going to be an underrated loss.
