On Tuesday night, the first College Football Playoff rankings were released. No, Virginia Tech wasn't anywhere near the rankings as they currently sit at 3-6 with three games remaining in what has been a frustrating season.

Since the school fired Brent Pry in September, the Hokies have been competitive under interim coach Philip Montgomery while the Virginia Tech search committee finds the next head coach. Wins over Wofford, North Carolina State, and California have Tech 3-3 under Montgomery.

This week, Virginia Tech is on its second bye of the season and second in three weeks. While they are off, there are still meaningful games over the final three weeks. After a trip to Florida State on Nov. 15, the Hokies will play two teams that are in the thick of the CFP rankings and can play spoiler.

Virginia Tech can create ACC College Football Playoff chaos over the final two weeks

After FSU, the Hokies return home to host Miami, who will need to win out and then have insane chaos just to be considered. However, with nothing to lose, Virginia Tech can really make the Miami season a miserable one with a win at Lane Stadium in what will be the final home game of 2025.

Losses to Louisville and SMU have the Hurricanes in the position they're in, ranked 18th. Their ACC Championship Game hopes are all but dashed, but they can still finish 10-2. Then things could really get interesting a week later when the Hokies head to Charlottesville.

Virginia is 8-1 and the highest-ranked team in the ACC in the CFP rankings at No. 14. Because they are the highest-ranked ACC team, they slide in the 11th spot in the CFP and would travel to sixth-seeded Ole Miss. Now there is a lot of football left to be played, and things will change, but imagine Virginia Tech going to Virginia Thanksgiving Weekend and ending the Cavaliers' dreams of the ACC Championship Game and the CFP? It's possible.
