Going into the 2026 college baseball season, Virginia Tech coach John Szefc made one thing clear: He was going to challenge his team early and often in the season. He did that, and it paid off.
After beginning the season 7-1, the Hokies hit a rough patch that began in early March, which saw them dip below .500 and then hover around that mark until they won their last four ACC series and secured the seventh-seed in the ACC Tournament last month in Charlotte. A win over Notre Dame in the quarterfinals locked up a bid in the NCAA Tournament and a second-seed in the Los Angeles Regional with top-seeded UCLA.

However, the Hokeis were swept out of the regional, dropping the first game to Cal Poly, then got bounced in the elimination game by the Bruins, who plated three runs in the bottom of the ninth to walk off Virginia Tech. When they returned to Blacksburg, Szefc and his staff did some huge work in terms of retention for the 2027 campaign. There were some pitchers who left for the MLB Draft or the Transfer Portal. Replacing the arms is going to be key, as on Thursday, it was announced that the Hokies are going to be tested early again in 2027.
Virginia Tech baseball to take part in early-season matchups with powerhouse programs
Szefc is again going to make sure that his team has an impressive NCAA Tournament résumé when it comes to Selection Monday next Memorial Day Weekend after the Hokies take part in the Nashville College Baseball Series along with Ohio State, Cincinnati, and Vanderbilt from March 5-7 at First Horizon Park, the home of the Milwaukee Brewers Triple-A team.

Cincinnati made the NCAA Tournament this past season, getting bounced in the Starkville Regional at Mississippi State. Vanderbilt missed the NCAA Tournament this past season, which is something that never happens. Expect Tim Corbin to reload his roster and be an NCAA Tournament team next season. Ohio State is a respected Big Ten program that will be a good test as well for the Hokies. Overall, this is a solid field for Virginia Tech to go up against.
