Coming off a second straight disappointing weekend in ACC play after dropping two out of three games to North Carolina, the Virginia Tech baseball team was looking to get back into the win column on the road with a non-conference game at VCU on Tuesday night.
The Rams entered the game below .500, but as we have learned this year, throw the records out in mid-week games in 2025. After falling behind early on a solo home run in the bottom of the first, the Hokies rallied multiple times to pick up a much needed victory to improve to 26-15 ahead of a trip to Durham this upcoming weekend for a three-game set with Duke.
In baseball at any level, responding in the next half inning to a team scoring is key, and that's what the Hokies did. In the top of the second, they tied the game at 1-1 on a David Lewis RBI single, and they took the lead on a Rams error. Lewis came around to score later in the inning on the backend of a double-steal with Clay Grady for a 3-1 lead.
VCU answered right back in the bottom of the frame with three runs for a 4-3 lead, but once again, the Hokies answered back in the next half inning on a David McCann RBI ground out to make it 4-4. The Rams regained the lead in the bottom of the fourth, 5-4, but after that, they were held scoreless.
Lewis drew a bases-loaded walk in the top of the fifth to tie the game, 5-5, and it stayed that way until an RBI double from Sam Tackett in the top of the eighth scored Grady for the game-winning run and a 6-5 lead.
