The Virginia Tech baseball team opened the 2025 season on Friday by splitting the first two games of their season-opening series with the Bucknell Bison. After winning the opening game, 19-0, the Hokies dropped the nightcap, 8-6, when a misplayed fly-ball turned into three runs for the visitors.

On Sunday at English Field, the Hokies were looking to win the series against their Patriot League opponent. Virginia Tech wasted little time in determining the outcome as they scored six runs in the first three innings to build an 18-0 lead on their way to the convincing run-rule victory. It was an impressive offensive display against the Bison pitching staff.

Virginia Tech scores 27 runs in drubbing of Bucknell

With a lot of questions surrounding the Hokies pitching staff after Brent Renfrow, that was the case Friday night after allowing eight runs to Bucknell. On Sunday, the Hokies knew they would need to score runs to give their pitching staff some breathing room and that's what they did.

The 27 runs put up by Tech is the most since joining the ACC in 2004 and the most since a 35-4 win at Georgetown two years earlier. The Hokies scored 27 runs on 22 hits, and 24 RBIs, and they had 11 extra-base hits. Broken down they were seven doubles, a triple, and three homers. It was an absurd afternoon of baseball that improved Virginia Tech to 2-1.

Sam Tackett led the offense with two home runs, to give him three early in the season. Sunday, he had a 500-foot blast and he drove in six runs with four total hits in the game. Luca Perriello had a grand slam for Virginia Tech in his career college at-bat.

Virginia Tech, which avoided an injury to centerfielder Cam Pittman who made an outstanding catch to end the top of the third inning crashing into the wall, continues their season-opening homestand on Tuesday when they welcome East Tennessee State to English Field before UNC-Greensboro comes to Blacksburg for a three-game series next weekend.
