After winning their first four games to begin the 2026 season, the Virginia Tech baseball team came crashing back to earth when they were blown out, 16-1, by Rutgers on Friday in Blacksburg. The Hokies swept William & Mary last weekend and beat a good East Tennessee State team during the week.
However, the Scarlet Knights came to Blacksburg and sent a message to Virginia Tech. The Hokies were looking to bounce back on Saturday afternoon against Rutgers in the middle game of the three-game series. Trailing 5-3 entering the bottom of the ninth innings, Virginia Tech tied the game with a pair of runs. In the top of the 10th, Rutgers plated three runs for an 8-5 lead. Down to their final three outs, the Hokies pulled off an improbable rally to even the series.
Virginia Tech baseball pulls of improbable rally in the bottom of the 10th to stun Rutgers
If there is one thing we've learned about Virginia Tech baseball this season, they never give up. They rallied to pull out wins against William & Mary, as well as ETSU. Saturday afternoon, however, took the cake over those.
Trailing 8-5, Hudson Lutterman launched a solo home run with one out to cut the deficit to 8-6. Sam Grube followed with a solo home run of his own to cut the deficit to one run. Nick Locurto drew a walk, and Ethan Bell delivered a two-run home run to center field to walk it off, 9-8, to even the series. Four runs, three hits with five batters is some kind of rally.
Now, unless you were in the stands at English Field, you didn't see this drama unfold. That's because Virginia Tech is not streaming the early-season baseball games on ACC Network Extra. In fact, they are not streaming any games at home until March 3 when Marshall visits for a non-conference game. Hokies fans will get to watch the first streamed game on Tuesday when they travel to James Madison.
Next weekend, Virginia Tech (5-1) will take part in the Amegy Bank College Baseball Series at Globe Life Field in Arlington, Texas, the home of the Texas Rangers. If you want to watch games against Texas A&M, Mississippi State, and Tennessee, it'll be streamed on FloSports. Good luck with that.
