Going into the final weekend of ACC play, the Virginia Tech baseball team was looking to help their cause to get into the NCAA Tournament, but they were also playing for seeding in the upcoming ACC Tournament. Hosting Clemson, the Hokies had an opportunity to raise their RPI and strengthen their chances for the 64-team NCAA Tournament later this month.

Virginia Tech took care of business early, winning the first two games over the Tigers to take the series before dropping Saturday's series final, and with other results across the conference going their way, John Szefc's team was able to secure the seventh seed in the tourney next week in Charlotte. With that seed comes a bye on Tuesday, and they will open play on Wednesday against the winner of Tuesday's contest between Clemson and Notre Dame.

If we're being honest, this sets up well for the Hokies to potentially strengthen their NCAA Tournament chances by picking up a win on Wednesday. If they do, then they will be off on Thursday and will face second-seeded North Carolina on Friday in the quarterfinals. Being bounced in the first game will make the Hokies sweat out selection Monday on Memorial Day.

What could become interesting is the potential opponents for the Hokies. Of course, they just played Clemson at English Field for three games, but they did not play Notre Dame this season. If they are lucky enough to win Wednesday's game, they have not played North Carolina this year as well.

It has been a short stay for the Hokies in recent ACC Tournaments, but if there is a year where they need to advance, it's this season. They have gotten back into the NCAA Tournament bubble and have a chance to get on the right side of the bubble with a win or two. They should have a rested rotation and bullpen thanks to getting a bye on the first day of the tournament.
