Things have been very quiet when it comes to recruiting in college football. However, that is all about to change as the calendar flips to August in a few days, and camps will begin across the country before you know it. The same can be said for high school players as well.
When it comes to the Class of 2027, most players have verbally committed, and signing day will be in early December again. As far as the Class of 2028 goes, things are going to begin to heat up this fall when it comes to recruiting. However, one star signal-caller in the rising junior class isn't waiting around to make his decision, and Virginia Tech is right in the mix.
Virginia Tech Class of 2028 recruit sets commitment date
Last week, four-star Class of 2028 quarterback Trace Hawkins released his Top 6 schools, with Virginia Tech in the mix along with LSU, Vanderbilt, Clemson, Duke and Kentucky. Instead of dragging things out in the fall and maybe the winter, the four-star Georgia native is going to announce his decision on Thursday at 6:30 p.m., EST.

Hawkins is the 258th-ranked prospect in the 2028 Rivals300. Although nothing is certain until Hawkins makes his commitment, it appears that the Hokies have made an impression on him, along with Duke and Vanderbilt. It shouldn't come as a surprise that Franklin and quarterbacks coach Danny O'Brien have made the impression they have.
As far as the Class of 2027 goes, Virginia Tech has a commitment from four-star Peter Bourque from Massachusetts. The Hokies are going to have a young quarterback room with transfers Ethan Grunkemeyer (Penn State) and Bruce Baker (North Carolina), along with returner Kelden Ryan.
This might seem a little early for a rising junior to make his commitment, but nothing should surprise nowadays when it comes to recruiting and college football. This is a rather under-the-radar chance for the Hokies to steal a commitment and land a big name early in the 2028 cycle.
