Updated look at Virginia Tech Women's Basketball bracketology after Clemson win

Was beating Clemson on Sunday good enough to get the Hokies women off the bubble?

For the last month-plus, the Virginia Tech women’s basketball team has been on the bubble when it comes to Charlie Creme and his NCAA Tournament bracketology. The Hokies have been hanging around in the Last Four In group despite dropping some bad games in February.

Creme made the point that the last spot the last week was Virginia Tech’s to lose as there was no team below them worthy of taking their spot. That all changed last Friday when the Hokies were passed by Harvard for the final spot in the field after an overtime loss for Virginia Tech at Boston College. After the Hokies beat Clemson on the road Sunday, Creme updated his bracketology heading into most of the conference tournaments this week, and it was status quo for Megan Duffy and her team

Virginia Tech women remain first team out of Charlie Creme’s bracketology

Entering Sunday’s game at Clemson, the Hokies were facing a must-win over the Tigers as a fourth loss to a team below them in the ACC standings would have been bad. Already losses to Virginia, Stanford, Syracuse, and Boston College have been devastating enough. Virginia Tech was able to withstand a late rally from Clemson to win, 78-76, to clinch the No. 8 seed in this week’s ACC Tournament.

The win wasn’t enough to move Virginia Tech back into Creme’s Last Four In and they remained the first team out. The last four teams remained Washington, Minnesota, Princeton, and Harvard. Below the Hokies in the First Four Out are Arizona, Marquette and Saint Joseph’s.

Creme has eight ACC teams in his field and if they are going to ninth, they will need Virginia Tech to have a run in Greensboro. They open with Georgia Tech on Thursday and if they win that, they get top-seeded North Carolina State. Needing likely two wins this week to get back on the right side of NCAA Tournament bubble, but he did write Monday that beating Georgia Tech might be good enough to get on the right side of the bubble.

Duffy and her team have a lot of work to do to extend the Hokies NCAA Tournament streak.
