The 2024-25 Virginia Tech men's basketball season was one of frustration for not only the fanbase but also head coach Mike Young. Last week, the veteran coach posted a message to fans on the programs X account that he is going to turn things around in Blacksburg.
He is expected to have a bigger NIL package to work with this off-season and he has a number of scholarships available after the graduation of some players and five players to date entering the transfer portal. He is looking for a quick fix and turnaroun between incoming freshmen and the portal.
Young and his staff have been searching through the portal looking for players to come in and make an impact next season, and on Saturday, according to Tim Thomas of The Tech Lunch Pail, the Hokies hosted North Dakota State transfer Jacari White, who would be a massive addition to the program. Now, it appears that Virginia Tech will be hosting an ACC transfer who is looking to set up a visit date.
Virginia Tech is working to set up a visit date with Clemson transfer Del Jones
According to agent Larry Hall of HOF Sports Group, Clemson transfer point guard Del Jones is working on setting up a visit to Blacksburg after visiting Vanderbilt on Saturday. As a freshman for the Tigers this season, Jones averaged 11.8 minutes a game, but Young got an up close look at Jones, who had his best game against the Hokies earlier this month.
In Clemson's 72-57 win over Virginia Tech on March 8, Jones had 13 points on 5-for-7 shooting from the field, five rebounds, and two assists. For the season, he averaged 3.8 points, 1.5 rebounds, and 1.0 assists for Brad Brownell.
A combo guard who can be effective on or off the ball, Jones is an athletic backcourt player that is what Young and Ben Hammond need next season. He knows the ACC landscape very well, and he got some NCAA Tournament experience this season playing 12 minutes with two points, a rebound, and two assists in a 67-75 first-round loss to McNeese State 10 days ago. Jones was the 16th-ranked point guard in the Class of 2024, according to 247Sports.
