If there was ever a trap game in college football this past weekend, it was Virginia Tech's game at California. You might ask why. Well, for a number of reasons.

First off, the Hokies were coming off a devastating loss at home to Pittsburgh eight days earlier when senior kicker John Love missed a chip-shot field goal attempt. Virginia Tech dominated the stats, but four turnovers and a missed field goal summed up the night.

On the flip side, the Hokies had to fly cross-country and face an undermanned Cal team that was missing several starters, and Virginia Tech was a double-digit favorite. What could go wrong? Well, everything, as it turns out, in a 25-20 Cal upset.

Cal coach Tosh Lupoi adds insult to injury for Virginia Tech after upset win

Let's be honest, on paper, the rosters were not even close. Virginia Tech's was better. However, paper doesn't win games; games are won on the field. Missing quarterback Jaron-Keawe Sagapolutele, a running back, and multiple starters in the secondary, the Golden Bears outcoached and outplayed the Hokies from the opening kickoff. After the game, Tosh Lupoi added salt in the wounds of Virginia Tech fans.

"Just proud of these guys, man,'' Lupoi said. "Really preparing all week, and that's a really good team that they just beat. There is a lot of NFL players on that team, and our staff, our team, just sticking together, and doing what it takes to go get a dub."

The key part of the quote was "There is a lot of NFL players on that team." Lupoi isn't wrong, but man, imagine having the talent the Hokies have on the roster that is going to be playing on Sundays and losing to Cal? With the remaining schedule Cal has, they are not even going to be a bowl team. Maybe not the Hokies either, after watching the last two performances.

California is not a good football team. A bunch of backups were coached better and executed better than Virginia Tech. You knew there were going to be disappointing losses in the James Franklin era in Blacksburg; you just didn't think it would be game No. 6, did you? Maybe you did. I guess you should have seen this coming.
