August is here, which means the dog days of summer are here, but so are college football fall camps. That means we are just 30 days away from Virginia Tech opening the season against South Carolina in Atlanta on Aug. 31. It'll be the first of two tough openers against SEC foes, with Vanderbilt visiting Blacksburg six nights later.
There has been a lot of roster turnover for Virginia Tech from the team that rolled over Virginia last Thanksgiving Weekend to become bowl-eligible. There has been some turnover with the coaching staff with two new coordinators joining along with a new offensive line coach. There are a lot of storylines facing the Hokies this fall and there are a lot of camp battles that are going to be worth watching. With that said, here are 10 players I'm excited to hear about this summer in camp.
Kyron Drones: Quarterback
Last season, injuries hampered Kyron Drones' 2024 season, which was cut short in November. Then he had his spring cut short for a medical procedure, and now he's healthy and back for his third season in Blacksburg. Also, back is Pop Watson, and Oklahoma State transfer Garrett Rangel will push him for the QB2 spot.
It'll be interesting to see how much Drones is pushed in practices this summer and how things go under new offensive coordinator Philip Montgomery. Drones can hurt teams with his arm and legs, and Montgomery might be the perfect coach to get the most out of his skill set.
Tucker Holloway: Wide Receiver/ Punt Returner
Last season, the Hokies suffered a big blow when Tucker Holloway was lost for the season with an injury. Jaylin Lane handled the punt return duties just fine, but make no mistake about it, Holloway can change a game with one punt return. He is an underrated player to have back this season.
