After the 2023 regular season final, the New England Patriots moved on from six-time Super Bowl coach Bill Belichick. After interviewing for some jobs for this season, he decided to stay off the sideline instead of returning.
In September, ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter reported that Belichick would like to return to coaching in 2025. All football fans thought that it would be in the NFL, but it appears that he is looking to dip his toe into the college ranks.
Bill Belichick reportedly interviews for North Carolina position
According to Inside Carolina, Belichick interviewed for the open position at North Carolina over a week after the school parted ways with veteran Mack Brown. There are some candidates for the position that is currently the best opening in the country. Some of the other names linked to the Tar Heels job as Tulane's Jon Sumrall and Georgia defensive coordinator Glenn Schumann, according to Inside Carolina.
Belichick is not someone who would fit in with the current state of college sports with the NIL and the transfer portal. If he does, there is more money available in the SEC and Big Ten than there is with an SEC school. Former Boston College coach Jeff Hafley left Chestnut Hill last January to become the defensive coordinator of the Green Bay Packers because of the way college football is going.
Belichick's offensive coordinator last season in New England, Bill O'Brien, is the new head coach at Boston College and as a former college coach at Penn State, he will be able to make the transition to the college game from the pro. Belichick? It's hard to envision.
Belichick coming into the ACC would be a shakeup in the conference coaching ranks, for sure. Virginia Tech doesn't have North Carolina on their schedule until 2027 and by then who knows what the coaching situation in Chapel Hill looks like, but rest assured, the anticipation for that game if Belichick is on the sideline would be off the charts.
