It took some time, but four members of the Virginia Tech baseball team were selected in the 2025 MLB Draft in Atlanta on Monday. Pitchers Mathieu Curtis, Griffin Stieg (who transferred to Alabama earlier this month), and Andrew Sentlinger, along with outfielder Jared Davis, were selected for the next level.
Curtis was picked by the Atlanta Braves in the 14th round and 427th overall. After transferring from USC Upstate, the right-hander went 3-2 this past season for John Szefc with a 5.35 ERA in 38.2 innings pitched and 49 strikeouts in 26 appearances.
Davis was picked by the Athletics in the 17th round and the 500th pick of the draft. He batted .283 for the Hokies in 2025 with 58 hits, 14 of which were doubles and nine home runs. The speedy outfielder drove in 44 runs for Virginia Tech while going 14-for-19 in stolen bases. It'll be interesting to see if he comes back for his final year in Blacksburg or goes pro.
Stieg was a big part of the Hokies staff as a sophomore, and the right-hander was selected in the 18th round and 542nd overall. He went 3-2 for Virginia Tech in 2024 as a sophomore with a 4.70 ERA in 51.2 innings, and he struck out 48 in 13 starts on the weekends. He did not pitch this past season because of elbow surgery and will be a big piece of the Crimson Tide staff in 2026.
Sentlinger was selected in the 20th round and 586th overall by the Chicago White Sox. He is 6-4 in his college career with a 5.13 ERA in 52.2 innings pitched with 60 strikeouts. When healthy, he is a big piece of Szefc's bullpen for Virginia Tech as a left-handed hurler.
