Talk about a two-yar postseason run that nobody in Charlottesville will forget for a long time, if ever.

In the first round of the 2018 NCAA Tournament, the Virginia men's basketball team entered the tourney as a No. 1 seed and they became the first team ever to lose to a No. 16 seed when the University of Maryland-Baltimore County stunned the Cavaliers and the college basketball world with a 74-54 victory against the South Region's top-seed.

Fast forward one year later and Tony Bennett and his team when from the wrong side of history to an NCAA champion.

Virginia is the last ACC team to win the NCAA Tournament

In 2019, the Cavaliers bounced back from losing the year before in historic fashion to win the championship. The top seed in the South Region, Virginia beat Gardner-Webb in the first round, then took down Oklahoma in the second round. In the Sweet 16, the Cavaliers beat Oregon before beating Purdue in the Elite Eight. At the Final Four, Virginia outlasted Auburn in a 63-62 classic when Kyle Guy knocked down three free throws with one second left. In the championship game, they defeated Texas Tech, 85-77, to go from embarrassment to on top of the college basketball world.

Before that in 2017, North Carolina defeated Gonzaga, 71-65, in Phoenix, Arizona to win the NCAA Tournament. In 2021 under first-year coach Hubert Davis, the Tar Heels made a run to the championship game only to come up short against Kansas, 72-69, in New Orleans.

Can an ACC team win the title this season? North Carolina might be the conference's best choice to do it, but there will be a loaded field with teams like Connecticut, Purdue, and Houston all going to have a say. It's been just five years since the ACC won the tournament, but it feels like Carolina has a chance this season.
