Practices for the 2024 women's college basketball season are underway. First-year Virginia Tech coach Megan Duffy is looking to build a foundation in his first season in Blacksburg after taking over for Kenny Brooks, who left for Kentucky following the Hokies' elimination in the second round of the NCAA Tournament last March.

Since coming to Virginia Tech, Duffy has hit the ground running and has spent a lot of time not only planning for the upcoming season but also when it comes to recruiting. So far, she has landed a pair of commitments in the Class of 2025 in guard Katie Sears from North Carolina, the 91st-ranked player at ESPN, and Amani Jenkins from Iowa, who is the 92nd-ranked player by ESPN.

Last month, four-star guard Lena Gorardi, daughter of former New York Yankees catcher Joe, committed to Oklahoma State over Virginia Tech and others. Thursday, the Hokies learned they are a finalist for a Top 50 player.

Lauren Hurst, a Top 50 recruit and four-star from Cleveland, Tennessee, narrowed her list down to five schools, which included Virginia Tech. Also making the cut are Tennessee, North Carolina, and Clemson. and North Carolina State. Aside from her home state Tennessee, it's a battle between four ACC schools and four good programs for Hurst next season.

The 6-foot-3 Hurst is also an elite volleyball player, which helps her prepare for the basketball season. In her final five choices, she has made visits to each school and now is in the process of discussing her options beyond high school. Currently, Duffy has a pair of four-star players committed in the Class of 2025 and Hurst would be a huge addition as a power forward if the Hokies can secure a commitment.
