Women's Soccer shutouts James Madison
The Hokies women's soccer team improved to 2-0 on the young season with a 2-0 victory on the road against James Madison University three days after beating Campbell, 4-0, in their season opener.
Virginia Tech was in total control from the start and opened the scoring in the ninth minute when Samantha DeGuzman took advantage of a Dukes turnover in their box and beat the goalie to a loose ball for a 1-0 advantage. Twenty-two minutes later, Maysen Nelson doubled the lead before halftime.
That was the start of a three-game road trip for the Hokies who will travel to Delaware Thursday night before traveling to Monmouth next Sunday for an afternoon start in New Jersey.
Joey Slye making the case to make the New England Patriots
In May, former Virginia Tech placekicker Joey Slye signed with the New England Patriots to try and push youngster Chad Ryland in camp and that's what he is doing. According to Nicole Yang of the Boston Globe, Slye is emerging as the leader for the kicking duties this season in Foxborough.
Slye made all four of his field goal attempts in the Patriots' practice Sunday, while Ryland went 3-for-5 in his attempts. It wouldn't be surprising to see Slye emerge the winner and nail down the kicking duties for a team picked to finish last in the AFC East.
Tucker Holloway named All-American
Whether or not Tucker Holloway is going to be able to return punts this season remains to be seen, but that didn't stop him from being named an All-American. The Sporting News named him their All-American Second Team as a punt returner. He was one of the most exciting kick returners last season.
