Another need in the upcoming transfer portal for the Hokies according to Hummer is at linebacker. In December, Sam Brumfield committed to Virginia Tech from the transfer portal and he has looked good in spring practices. The Middle Tennessee State transfer played 642 snaps last season and recorded 81 tackles, 3.5 sacks, two forced fumbles, and eight quarterback hurries. It seems like he will fit in with a defense that got better and better as ACC play went on last fall and returns a ton of talent.

Brumfield has a chance to make a very good impression in a game situation on Saturday with Kelli Lawson missing spring practices after undergoing surgery following the 2023 season. Jaden Keller has got a lot of work at linebacker this spring with Brumfield, both learning the Mike and Will spots. Brumfield could be considered small for the position at 5-foot-11 and 230 pounds, but it’s something that doesn’t seem to bother Pry or defensive coordinator Chris Marve. Brumfield has the talent to come in next season and make a good defense even better at the second level behind a stout defensive line.
