One area that Virginia Tech football coach Brent Pry has had a lot of success in has been recruiting, especially with the Class of 2025. Along with Fontel Mines, the Hokies have secured several in-state commitments, something that needed to happen after the disconnect with the previous head coach.

Virginia Tech has 16 commitments in the Class of 2025, with from the state of Virginia. They had four four-star recruits but lost one when Matthew Outten flipped his commitment on Sept. 2 from the Hokies to Penn State. Despite that flip, Virginia Tech’s class remains in the Top 50 according to ESPN.

Virginia Tech Class of 2025 football ranked in ESPN Top 50

You might be thinking, “Top 50, ok, whatever,” but this is a step in the right direction for a program that went through some tough times, and Pry trying to bring it back to national prominence. The good sign is that two of the three four stars are Virginia natives with athlete Micah Matthews and linebacker Brett Clatterbaugh being from the Commonwealth.

Outten flipping his commitment is a tough loss and here’s hoping that no more commits flip before the signing period begins, but having a Top 50 is crucial for the program going forward. Several other ACC programs are ranked higher than the Hokies with Miami leading the way at No. 11, followed by Georgia Tech (No. 17), Clemson (No. 19), SMU (No. 27), Florida State (No. 29), Stanford (No. 36), Duke No. 39), Syracuse (No. 40), Pittsburgh (No. 42), North Carolina State (No. 45) and North Carolina (No. 46). Creping up behind the Hokies is Virginia at No. 49. The opening opponent for Virginia Tech next season, South Carolina, comes in at No. 35.

You can see that while the Hokies are down at No. 47, it is imperative that they stay in the Top 50 to compete with conference foes who continue to hit it big in recruiting.
