Virginia Tech Football 2024 Positional Break Down: Tight Ends
By Scott Roche
Most people when they are discussing the Virginia Tech football team entering the 2024 season, a lot of eyes are on the wide receivers that the Hokies have returning, and why not? It is a talented and deep group that if they stay healthy can be elite.
Not to be outdone, Virginia Tech returns a tight end group that will be key to the offense, whether it's blocking or catching passes from quarterback Kyron Drones. As the Hokies were nearing the end of camp last summer, they suffered a key loss in Nick Gallo who was lost for the season. Dae'Quan Wright took a lot of snaps in Gallo's place, but after the Tech became bowl-eligible with a win over Virginia, he announced he was entering the transfer portal. He did not play in the Military Bowl against Tulane which opened the door for a pair of younger players who took full advantage.
One position grouping that is worth watching to see how things unfold during camp is with the tight ends and let's take a deeper look into the position grouping.
Virginia Tech Tight End Position Breakdown
Benji Gosnell
Wright, who had 28 catches for 366 yards in 2023, ended up transferring to Ole Miss last winter, but his absence in the Military Bowl opened the door for Benji Gosnell and Harrison Saint Germain who each caught a touchdown pass in the 41-20 victory. Gosnell, whose brother Stephen is a wide receiver for the Hokies, had 12 receptions for 137 yards with his biggest game being against Marshall when he caught four passes for 52 yards.
Harrison Saint Germain
Saint Germain played in all 13 games last season but saved his best for last. Against Tulane, he caught two passes in the rain for 13 yards, including a 1-yard touchdown from Drones. The 6-foot-4, 252-pound Virginia native got one start last fall and figures to play a bigger role this season.
Nick Gallo
On New Year's Day, Gallo announced that he was returning for another season for the Hokies. In his first four years in Blacksburg, he has 55 catches for 469 yards and a touchdown. Gallo going down last season was a tough blow coming out of camp, but while he won't be a focal point of the offense in the passing game, he gives the Hokies veteran depth at the position.
Other players on the roster who make the position deep and could make some noise this year are Zeke Wimbush, Cole Pickett, Ja'Ricous Hairston, Connor Ferguson, and Cole Reemsynder. Overall this is a group that will be counted on in multiple ways this fall within the offense whether it's blocking or receiving, but what will be key is Gosnell and Saint Germin taking the next step in their developments for the future, which could be a good one with both players. They have depth here at a position that needs it.
