After splitting their first two games of the season in frustrating fashion, the Virginia Tech football team was looking to clean the slate from their four non-conference games by beginning ACC play Friday night at No. 7 Miami.
Leading for most of the game, the Hokies fell behind, 38-34, with just under two minutes remaining, but had two timeouts and Kyron Drones under center. The second-year starter moved Virginia Tech down to the Miami 38 with three seconds left. He dropped back and lofted a Hail Mary to the end zone where Da'Quan Felton leaped among teammates Jaylin Lane, Bhayshul Tuten, and three Hurricanes defenders. Felton appeared to come down with the ball and referees ruled a touchdown on the field.
Catch or no catch?👀

However, the play went to video review and somehow, someway, the replay center found enough evidence to overturn the call from a 40-38 Virginia Tech win to a 38-34 loss. Hokies fans vented on X after the call was overturned.
Ain’t no way they had enough to overturn that smh 🤦🏾♂️

You want to know who overturned that Virginia Tech - Miami TD call?
— Adam Silverstein (@SilversteinAdam) September 28, 2024
Jim Phillips.
Ridiculous - you can’t overturn that. If it isn’t Miami…doesn’t happen.

What a F***ing joke!

You are telling me you had COMPLETE VIDEO EVIDENCE TO REVERSE THAT?!? WHAT THE HECK
— Logan Ross (@LRossVT) September 28, 2024
Did they make the right call on the field? Maybe not, however, there was not enough video evidence to overturn the call.
I’m not sure how that got called a TD on the field, so ultimately, this is prob the right result. But they did call it a TD, and I’m not sure how that’s overturned other than you just decided you weren’t gonna let Miami lose that way.

I just do not know how you can call that a touchdown on the field and reverse it on replay.

I just don't know. #Hokies

The debate will go on for days whether the call was right on the field and whether or not there was enough video evidence to overturn the call on the field. In the end, it's a gut-wrenching loss for a Hokies team that showed up in the heat of South Florida, played their best game of the season and came up short in a game they deserved to win. Right now, it sums up the first five games of the 2024 season perfectly.
