Virginia Tech coach Mike Young tumbles in latest coaches ranking ahead of 2024-25
By Scott Roche
During his career on the sideline at Wofford and Virginia Tech as head men’s basketball coach, Mike Young has seen it all. Or at least he thought he had. Following last’s elimination in the NIT at the hands of Ohio State, he saw a mass exodus out of Blacksburg and had to redo his roster for the 2024-25 season.
If the Hokies are going to have success this season, they’ll need to do it with a group that will need to mesh quickly. With a ton of transfers, getting on the same page could take some time. With all the change in the offseason and the Hokies missing out on the NCAA Tournament last season, the veteran coach dropped in the latest rankings of Division 1 head coaches.
Mike Young falls in latest D1 coaches rankings ahead of 2024-25
Tristan Freeman of Busting Brackets, Fansided’s college basketball site, dropped Virginia Tech’s head coach nine spots in his latest D1 college basketball coaches rankings where he ranks all 364 head coaches. Young came in at No. 54 in this year’s rankings after coming in at No. 45.
"Never Young’s entire coaching career came at Wofford, spending three decades shaping the Terriers. He had been an assistant for over a decade before becoming head coach in 2002. Young took Wofford to five NCAA Tournaments, notably winning their first-round game during a 30-5 season in 2019. Virginia Tech hired him shortly thereafter and he’s led them on two trips to the Big Dance, including an ACC Tournament title in 2022. Unfortunately, the last two years have seen the Hokies come short of the Big Dance, settling for NIT appearances."
It is not surprising to see Young drop in the rankings after the Hokies failed to make the NCAA Tournament last season and then the major roster overhaul that happened, but if there is someone who can turn things around, it’s Young. He is nine wins away from 400 and should eclipse that this season.
