Going into the season, one of the deeper positions for the Virginia Tech football team was at wide receiver. Last December, that was one position where head coach Brent Pry got a lot of retainment was in that room with four receivers announcing together that they were return for 2024.

So far through two games, it was been a struggle to consistently get the ball to the play-makers on the outside. Ali Jennings did catch a 62-yard touchdown pass in the fourth quarter against Vanderbilt in the season-opener, while Jaylin Lane has a touchdown on a punt return against Marshall, and Da’Quan Felton hauled in a fourth-quarter touchdown pass from quarterback Kyron Drones.

One wide receiver who has made some big catches through the first two weeks is Stephen Gosnell, including a highlight reel catch this past weekend. That catch did not go unnoticed by Old Dominion coach Ricky Rahne, whose team will host the Hokies this Saturday night.

Ricky Rahne had praise for Stephen Gosnell’s catch against Marshall

Old Dominion’s head coach was asked about the Virginia Tech wide receiver group and he immediately brought up Gosnell’s third quarter diving catch deep in Marshall territory.

“I think that was one of the best catches I’ve seen in a long time. Full extension and there was no doubt that he caught it. That was amazing,’’ Rahne said.

That was one of the better catches of the season, no doubt, but if Rahne was impressed with that catch, then he must have been impressed with Marshall’s Christian Fitzpatrick who made an even better one-handed catch in the game.

Regardless, Rahne knows the potential that the Hokies have on the outside this weekend, and trying to contain them will likely be one of their top priorities going into the game, while on the flip side, the Hokies will be looking to get them more involved early and often.
