Monday, the Virginia Tech football team was snubbed in the first Preseason Coaches Top 25 Poll, coming in at No. 28 with four ACC schools ranked ahead of them. Clearly expectations are high going into the 2024 season for a number of reasons with one of the biggest being the amount of retainment they got from last season.

Head coach Brent Pry is going into his third season in Blacksburg and to say that the former Penn State defensive coordinator has the program going in the right direction would be an understatement. Several people believe that the Hokies are a dark horse program this season and one national college football writer thinks that they are on the rise in Pry's third season.

ESPN released their ACC preview for the upcoming season and David Hale is noticing what is going on over the last year in Blacksburg.

"Coach Brent Pry said during ACC Kickoff that he would be disappointed if the Hokies do not compete for a conference championship this year. This is a team that has made steady improvement since Pry arrived, but with its key players returning on offense and defense, the Hokies clearly want more."

Pry did make the statement last month in Charlotte that he would be disappointed if his team was back in that city in December for the ACC Championship Game. That puts some pressure on him, his staff, and players, but they wouldn't want it any other way. ESPN also named quarterback Kyron Drones one of their favorite players this season, while their game at home on Nov. 9 against Clemson was a game to watch and Tech came in at No. 5 in their power rankings.

Another reason why the program is on the rise is not only because of what is coming back this season on the roster, but recruiting has been big over the last couple of months with the Class of 2025 with all the in-state recruits Pry and his staff are keeping in the Commonwealth. There are several reasons why the Hokies are on the rise not only this season but beyond.
