The Virginia Tech football team will open the 2024 season at FirstBank Stadium in Nashville against Vanderbilt. The Commodores are coming off a rough 2023 campaign in the SEC and are going through a huge roster turnover with the transfer portal.

One position that Vanderbilt has a lot more questions than answers is at quarterback when spring practices begin. Gone is their quarterback room from last season and they added a pair of transfers who will battle for the poisition this spring and over the summer.

247Sports lists Vanderbilt as an under-the-radar QB battle

Brad Crawford of 247Sports released seven under-the-radar quarterback battles that they are going to have their eye on once spring practices begin and one of those will be Vanderbilt. Transfers Diego Pavia and Nate Johnson are expected to battle for the starting spot.

Pavia is the leader in the clubhouse going into practices and he is coming off a season at New Mexico State where he threw for 2,973 yards, 26 touchdowns, and nine interceptions. Johnson, a four-star, played very little at Utah last season, throwing for 499 yards and three touchdowns for the Utes.

Regardless of who starts under center against the Hokies, there are likely going to be more questions than answers for the Commodores on Aug. 31. Virginia Tech has a lot of experience returning next season in the secondary with Mansoor Delane and Dorian Strong back, while Anywaun Powell-Ryland and Josh Fuga return along the line. Brent Pry also added transfers on defense along the line and at linebacker to add more depth to a unit that played well over the final two months of the season and in the Military Bowl against Tulane.

Vanderbilt is not an SEC powerhouse, but they will be an interesting season-opening opponent for the Hokies who have high hopes entering the season.
