Best quotes from Virginia Tech football's victory over Stanford
By Scott Roche
It was a much-needed bounce-back victory for the Virginia Tech football team Saturday afternoon against the Stanford Cardinal. We found out a lot about the Hokies after responding from their stunning 38-34 loss at Miami eight days ago. After the game, Brent Pry and others spoke about the 31-7 win.
Brent Pry on the Hokies running game
Going into the game, one of the bigger questions was whether or not the Hokies would be able to run the ball against a Top 10 rushing defense. They didn't run for a season high on the Cardinal defense, Clemson did that last week for 150, but 136 by Tech was more than enough to get the job done.
"I think that's who we need to be. We've got to be able to run it," said Pry.
He's not wrong. The running game with Bhayshul Tuten and Kyron Drones is vital to what the Hokies want to do offensively. It was another good day running the rock.
Brent Pry on Virginia Tech's defense bending, but not breaking
In the first half, the Hokies defense let Stanford go down the field on their first two possessions, but they ended up keeping them off the scoreboard. On the game's first drive, they forced a missed field goal, then forced a fumble on the next possession at the Tech 3 and they recovered.
"We don't want to bend either,'' said Pry.
They have bent all season long and broken multiple times, but it was big how they didn't didn't break in the first half and allowed their offense to build a 14-0 halftime lead. That is something not to overlook in the big picture of the win.
Brent Pry on his team traveling out to the West Coast on a business trip
It was a business trip for the Hokies out to Stanford and really, a season-defining game. It was all business for the Hokies.
"We're going to keep it rockin' and rollin' all the way back to the East Coast,'' said Pry.
It should be a much more enjoyable plane ride back to Blacksburg for the Hokies after picking up the win and doing it impressive fashion.
Brent Pry on Kaleb Spencer's game at linebacker
Kaleb Spencer had a strong game at linebacker. The Miami transfer had several big tackles and carried over his strong performance against his former team last week against the Cardinal.
"You can't deny production,'' said Pry.
No, you can't. He has been a nice, no wait, he has been a huge addition to the Hokies and has fit in well and been big at linebacker.
