5 bold Virginia Tech football predictions for 2024
By Scott Roche
After eight months, we have made it to game week for the Virginia Tech football team. The Hokies’ 2024 season kicks off in Nashville against Vanderbilt and for the first time in some time, there is hype surrounding Virginia Tech as Year 3 of the Brent Pry-era in Blacksburg begins.
Coming off a 7-6 season that saw a huge turnaround from a 1-3 start to a 5-3 record in the ACC and capped off with a Military Bowl win over Tulane to give the Hokies a ton of momentum going into 2024. As we count down to kick off on Saturday afternoon at Vanderbilt, it’s time for five bold predictions for the Hokies 2024 season.
1. Virginia Tech leads the ACC in sacks
Last season Blacksburg became “Sacksburg’’ and for good reason. The Hokies got after the quarterback often and were led by Antwaun Powell-Ryland’s 9.5 sacks and getting him back along with adding Aeneas Peebles, Kelvin Gilliam, and Kemari Copeland along the defensive line in the transfer portal to go with mike linebacker Sam Brumfield, their defense is going to be strong.
The problem that teams are going to have is who are they going to double-team, which would leave room for another player to step up and get to the quarterback. Peebles should see an increase from his 4.5 at Duke last season and solidify the defensive line. “Sackaburg’’ should be alive and well in 2024.
