The 2024 winter college football transfer portal is open and after limited action last season, Virginia Tech has seen a large amount of players officially enter the portal when it opened last Monday. Last season, head coach Brent Pry got a ton of retainment, but some players did enter the portal and found new homes for this season.
Some of the former Hokies' who entered had success at their new schools and some did not. Virginia Tech even saw one former teammate this season early in the season in a non-conference game. Let's take a deep dive one year later and see which former Virginia Tech players starred or sunk in 2023 at their new home and render a verdict.
Bryce Duke
It didn't take long for the Hokies to run into one of their former teammates in running back Bryce Duke. Week 3, Virginia Tech went to Old Dominion and picked up a 37-17 victory, but it was Duke's best game of the season, of course.
He rushed for 85 yards on four carries, including a 48-yard burst for the Monarchs. For the season, Duke had 46 carries and 285 yards while averaging 6.2 yards a carry. He also had nine receptions out of the backfield for 58 yards as well in 10 games for an ODU team that went 5-7 in the Sun Belt Conference. At Virginia Tech, he fell behind Bhayshul Tuten and Malachi Thomas on the depth chart. It wasn't surprising to see him transfer when all was said and done.
