This time last year, expectations were high and things were rolling for the Virginia Tech football team. Then, once the season started, a season with so much promise quickly spiraled out of control, and what was expected to be a big step in the rebuild under Brent Pry turned into another .500 season with a 6-6 finish.

As expected, after the Hokies knocked off Virginia Thanksgiving Weekend, a number of players opted out of the Duke's Mayo Bowl against Minnesota to prepare for the NFL Draft, while other key players hit the transfer portal. There was no surprise when the Golden Gophers rolled to a win and Tech finished 6-7.

Following the NFL Draft, after five players were picked two weeks ago in Green Bay, and another handful agreed to undrafted free agent contracts and leaving Hokies fans with the same question that Chip Patterson of CBS Sports had.

Now that spring practices are in the books for everyone, Patterson had one of overreaction for each ACC team, and the one he had for Virginia Tech is the same one that fans had after the NFL Draft. With a strong NFL Draft, why didn't the Hokies have more wins in 2024?

As a matter of fact, we wrote about the 2025 NFL Draft proving more than the 2024 season was a huge swing and a miss for Pry and Virginia Tech. There is no doubt that the talent was there to win many more games than six. Say eight, nine, or maybe even 10? We'll never know.

The talent isn't the reason they only won six games; a big reason they didn't win more was their 0-5 record in one-score games, while their wins were convincing blowouts. That's not a recipe for success, and that kind of season multiple times can get a coach fired. There are several areas where the Hokies need to improve this upcoming season, and winning one-score games is a must.
