After the Virginia Tech men’s basketball team was eliminated from the first round of the ACC Tournament to California, head coach Mike Young didn’t hold back when discussing this past season that ended at 13-19 and the future. He sounded like a coach who didn’t want to go through another rough season.
Young referenced that they needed more players and that as soon as he got back from Charlotte earlier this month, he was going to begin building the roster for the 2025-26 season. It started with five players entering the transfer portal and, in the big picture, the one loss to date that might be is wing Jaydon Young. The rest can be replaced through the portal if the right decisions are made.
On Wednesday, athletic director Whit Babcock met with a couple of media members and spoke on several topics, incuding the struggling seasons the football and men’s basketball teams had. It didn’t meet the standards of many. Including Hokie Nation.
Mike Young releases a message about turning things around
Young released a message on the Virginia Tech men’s basketball X account that they are not backing down and that they are going to get it right. That is a reference to the past season and going forward. What makes it a little more positive to believe is that Young is reportedly going to have a bigger NIL package to work with.

Is it going to be at the top of the ACC packages? No, but if true, it’s certainly a step in the right direction. Now, Hokies fans want to hear this, but they also want to see results, which they haven’t always gotten.
The fact that we are in this position is rather unsettling for Virginia Tech and Young. There is no question that Mike Young can still coach and with a better roster, they can quickly turn things around, especially if he has the backing of the higher-ups. Again, it’s great to hear, but it also needs to done correctly this off-season to get to where the fans want program to be, in the NCAA Tournament.
